David Cochran discusses the role of biologic width in implant dentistry and its importance for soft and hard tissue stability and health around dental implants as well as for the esthetic outcome of implant-supported reconstructions.

This lecture gives an overview of the relevant comparative anatomy and histology surrounding teeth and implants in healthy or pathologic conditions. Emphasis is placed on creating physiologic relationships and minimizing inflammation. The influence of factors such as the implant-abutment interface, timing of loading, surface characteristics, and the presence of inflammation are discussed based on current evidence.
