Peri-implantitis has been defined as an inflammatory process affecting the hard and soft tissues surrounding an implant in function. 

Bacterial plaque typically has been implicated as the cause of peri-implantitis, and as such, treatment must include anti-infective measures. Hence, the primary objective of surgical treatment is to gain access to the affected implant surface for debridement and decontamination.
