Horizontal or lateral ridge augmentation is defined as any bone augmentation procedure of the alveolar ridge in the horizontal dimension. It can be performed using a block graft, particulate grafts, or guided bone regeneration (GBR) procedures. A subgroup of horizontal augmentation is contour augmentation, in which the augmentation is performed simultaneously with implant placement in the esthetic zone to ensure long-term favorable esthetics and function.
